Introduction
Have you ever looked at your skincare shelf and wondered, “Which product goes first?”
With cleansers, serums, facial oils, moisturizers, masks, exfoliants and so many other products available, figuring out the right order can feel more complicated than it needs to be.
The good news? You don't need to memorize a complicated skincare routine.
There isn't one absolute “correct” order that applies to every person or every product. Different formulations, ingredients and skin concerns can change how products should be used. But there is one simple rule of thumb that works beautifully for most skincare routines:
Think thin to thick.
After cleansing, start with your lighter, water-based products and work your way toward heavier, more moisturizing products. In general, that means water-based serums first, active treatments next, facial oils afterward, and moisturizers toward the end of your routine.
And once you understand why you're layering products this way, your skincare routine becomes much easier to build.
Whether you're just beginning your skincare journey or looking to simplify your current regimen, this guide will help you build a routine that actually works.

Why Does Skincare Order Matter?
Skincare products are formulated with different textures, ingredients and purposes. A lightweight hydrating serum behaves very differently from a rich facial oil or cream.
That's why applying products in a thoughtful order can help your routine feel more comfortable and allow lighter products to be applied before heavier ones.
Dermatologists commonly recommend cleansing first, followed by treatments and then moisturizer and sunscreen in the morning.
But here's the important part:
Skincare layering isn't about following a rigid list of rules.
Think of the order as a framework.
Your skin may need a slightly different routine depending on your skin type, the products you're using and the ingredients in those products.
For most routines, however, thinnest to thickest is an excellent place to start.
RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
If you're looking for a simple yet complete skincare routine, the Youthful Balance Timeless Glow Set takes the guesswork out of building one. This carefully curated collection includes everything you need to cleanse, hydrate, treat, nourish, and moisturize your skin using products that are designed to work together for healthy, radiant-looking skin.
The Thinnest-to-Thickest Rule
Think about your skincare products in terms of their consistency.
Start with the thinnest products.
These are usually lightweight, water-based products such as:
- Essences
- Facial mists
- Hydrating serums
- Lightweight treatment serums
- Vitamin C serums
Then move toward thicker products.
These may include:
- Active treatment serums
- Facial oils
- Moisturizers
- Night creams
The idea is simple:
Lightweight products go on before heavier products.
Water-based products generally go before oil-based products because facial oils can create a more occlusive layer over the skin.
A simple way to remember it is:
Cleanse → Water-Based Serums → Active Treatments → Oil → Moisturizer → SPF (AM)
You won't necessarily use every step every day—and that's perfectly okay.
What serums go where?
Where Do Water-Based Serums Go?
After cleansing.
Water-based serums are typically some of the lightest products in your skincare routine, making them a natural next step after cleansing.
One of my favorite examples is a hydrating hyaluronic acid serum.
Youthful Balance Pro Tip
If you're using a hydrating serum containing hyaluronic acid, try applying it to slightly damp skin.
At Youthful Balance, our Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum contains three molecular weights of hyaluronic acid along with daisy extract and is designed to add lightweight hydration to your routine.
And here's a layering trick I especially love:
Don't let your hydrating serum completely dry before applying your facial oil.
Move relatively quickly from your hydrating serum into your next step.
RECOMMENDED PRODUCT
- A lightweight, water-based serum
- 3 different molecular weights of Hyaluronic Acid bind to water and pull it into the skins outer layer
- Apply to DAMP skin, and follow immediately with the Glow Skin Facial Oil and/or moisturizer
"Don't forget to use a Hyaluronic Acid serum correctly. Apply it to damp skin and follow immediately with your facial oil and moisturizer"
Where Do Active Serums Go?
This is where skincare layering can become a little more complicated.
“Active serum” can mean many different things, including products formulated with ingredients such as vitamin C, retinoids, AHAs, peptides or other targeted ingredients.
The specific ingredient and formulation matter.
Some treatments are designed to be applied directly after cleansing, while others fit naturally after a hydrating serum.
That's why I don't believe there is one universal skincare order that works for every single product.
Instead, think:
What is the consistency of the product? What are the ingredients? And what does the manufacturer recommend?
When you're using multiple treatment products, more isn't necessarily better. Dermatologists also caution that using too many products—particularly multiple anti-aging treatments—can increase the chance of irritation.
At Youthful Balance, I recommend that active serums be applied during your nighttime routine, so there is less of a chance of sun sensitivity, which can be associated with a lot of active serums.
Youthful Balance Favorite: Recovery Firming Serum
Our Recovery Firming Serum is a gentle, mild retinoid serum designed to support smoother, firmer, more youthful-looking skin without the harsh effects some people experience with stronger retinoids.
This serum is an excellent option for those who have found retinol or tretinoin too irritating for their skin. It helps improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture, and signs of aging while providing a more comfortable approach to incorporating retinoid benefits into your skincare routine.
Think of it as a gentle introduction to the power of retinoids—helping your skin look refreshed, renewed, and balanced while maintaining the hydration and nourishment it needs.
And you don't have to use the same active serum every day. If you're incorporating an exfoliating treatment into your routine, such as our Exfoliating AHA Serum or Smoothing AHA Serum, simply use one of those in place of the Recovery Firming Serum for that routine. Since both retinoids and AHAs are active ingredients, it's generally best to use one active serum per routine rather than layering them together. Alternating between a gentle retinoid on some nights and an AHA exfoliating serum on others is an excellent way to address multiple skin concerns while helping minimize the risk of irritation.
How to apply ACTIVE serums using Youthful Balance
Apply as your second step in your nighttime routine for Timeless Glow
Use 2-3 pumps on fingertips, then apply to face.
Allow to dry
Follow with Glow Skin Facial Oil
This product may be used with Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid if you wish to add a hydration step before this active serum
Use this product in the evening only, as retinoids may cause sun sensitivity.
Where does Facial Oil go?
Generally, facial oils tend to be a little heavier, so they are to be applied after moisturizer. But at Youthful Balanace, I always recommend the Glow Skin Facial Oil after your water-based serums and before your moisturizer.
Facial oils are designed to provide emollience and help support the skin's moisture barrier. Because they're oil-based and generally heavier than a watery serum, they typically belong later in your routine.
This is where Youthful Balance Glow Skin Facial Oil fits beautifully into a layering routine.
The goal isn't to use a huge amount of oil.
A few drops can be enough to spread over the face and neck.
Think of your facial oil as the bridge between your lightweight serums and your moisturizer.
Apply your water-based serums and/or active serums first.
Then your facial oil.
Then your moisturizer.
“Our Glow Skin Facial Oil is our very best selliing product. Don't be afraid of it. Growing up, everything was oil-free this, oil-free that. That's old news...Your skin's top layer is made up of oil! Adding a nourishing, quick absorbing oil is one of the best things you can do for your skin.”

Where Does Moisturizer Go?
Near the end of your skincare routine.
Moisturizer is one of the products that helps finish your routine by providing hydration and supporting the skin barrier.
That's why it generally follows your lighter serums and facial oil.
At night, you may finish with an even richer cream or night moisturizer depending on your skin's needs.
And in the morning, there is one very important final step:
Sunscreen.
If you're going outside during the day, broad-spectrum sunscreen should be the final step of your skincare routine, after your other skincare products.

Can You Use More Than One Serum?
Absolutely—but this is where you need a little strategy.
Using two serums isn't automatically a problem.
In fact, you may have two products that address completely different needs.
For example, you might want:
Hydration + a targeted treatment
The key is understanding what each serum does and whether the ingredients work well together.
If you're layering multiple serums, start with the lighter, more water-based formula and then move toward the heavier treatment.
But don't feel like you need to use every serum you own every morning and every night.
More products don't necessarily mean better skin.
A simple, consistent routine is often easier to maintain—and easier to understand.
How to Layer the Youthful Balance Timeless Glow Set
This is exactly why I created the Youthful Balance Timeless Glow Set.
The Timeless Glow Set takes the guesswork out of building a complete routine by bringing several essential skincare steps together.
The set includes:
- Gentle Niacinamide Cleanser
- Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum
- Glow Skin Facial Oil
- Recovery Firming Serum
- Dewy Skin Moisturizer
- Soothing Night Cream
Instead of wondering what goes where, let's walk through it.
Your Timeless Glow Morning Routine
Step 1: Gentle Niacinamide Cleanser
Start with clean skin.
The Gentle Niacinamide Cleanser removes impurities while providing a gentle first step for your skincare routine.
Cleanse and gently pat your face dry.
Step 2: Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum
Next comes your water-based hydrating serum.
Apply the Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum to damp skin.
This is your lightweight hydration step.
Step 3: Glow Skin Facial Oil
Next, apply your Glow Skin Facial Oil.
This is where you move from your water-based product into your oil-based product.
Pro tip: Don't wait for your hydrating serum to completely dry before applying your facial oil.
Step 4: Dewy Skin Moisturizer
Finish your skincare layers with Dewy Skin Moisturizer.
This gives your routine that final moisturizing step and leaves your skin feeling soft and comfortable.
Step 5: Sunscreen
If it's daytime and you'll be exposed to the sun, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen as the final step of your skincare routine.
Your morning routine:
Cleanser → Hydrating Serum → Facial Oil → Moisturizer → SPF
Simple.
Your Timeless Glow Evening Routine
Your nighttime routine is a little different.
Step 1: Cleanse
Begin with the Gentle Niacinamide Cleanser.
If you're wearing makeup or sunscreen, make sure you're thoroughly cleansing your skin.
Step 2: Recovery Firming Serum
Next comes the Recovery Firming Serum.
This is your targeted nighttime treatment step.
Step 3: Glow Skin Facial Oil
Follow with Glow Skin Facial Oil.
The oil helps transition your routine from your treatment serum into your moisturizing products.
Step 4: Soothing Night Cream
Finish with your Soothing Night Cream.
This creates a comforting final layer for your nighttime routine.
Your evening routine:
Cleanser → Recovery Serum → Facial Oil → Night Cream
And that's it.

What About Other Youthful Balance Serums?
Here's where understanding layering becomes especially helpful.
Youthful Balance has several serums designed for different skincare goals.
You don't necessarily need to use all of them together.
For example, if you're incorporating an exfoliating AHA serum into your routine, you may choose to use it on specific nights rather than stacking it with every other active you own.
The same principle applies to other active ingredients, like Retinol. And remember, active serums or moisturizers should typically be saved for your evening routine so they can work their magic while you sleep!
Your skincare routine should be customized to your skin—not dictated by how many products you can fit on your bathroom counter.
Triple Threat
This serum set includes a morning serum (Nourishing Vitamin C Serum), our Glow Skin Facial OIl, and an evening serum (Recovery Firming Serum)
1-Hydrating Serum
2-Active Serum
3-Facial Oil
What Skincare Ingredients Should You Mix—and What Should You Keep Separate?
Once you understand the thin-to-thick rule, there's another important part of skincare layering to understand:
Not every active ingredient needs to be used at the same time.
Some ingredients play beautifully together and can be layered without much concern. Others are more powerful and can become irritating when you stack them together.
The goal isn't to be afraid of active ingredients.
It's to understand them.
Ingredients That Play Well With Others
Some skincare ingredients are wonderfully easy to incorporate into almost any routine.
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is one of the easiest ingredients to layer with other skincare products.
It's a hydrating ingredient rather than an exfoliating or resurfacing active, so it generally plays well with most other ingredients.
You can typically pair hyaluronic acid with:
- Vitamin C
- Retinoids
- AHA products
- Niacinamide
- Facial oils
- Moisturizers
This is one reason I love including a hydrating serum in a skincare routine.
Hydration doesn't have to compete with your other skincare goals.
In fact, a hydrating serum can be an excellent foundation for a routine that also includes targeted active ingredients.
Niacinamide
Niacinamide is another incredibly versatile ingredient.
It generally plays well with most other skincare ingredients, including:
- Hyaluronic acid
- Vitamin C
- Retinoids
- AHAs
- Moisturizers
- Facial oils
This makes niacinamide a great ingredient for a daily skincare routine.
The Youthful Balance Gentle Niacinamide Cleanser is an easy way to incorporate niacinamide into your routine without adding another complicated treatment step.
The Easy Rule
If you're ever feeling overwhelmed by ingredient combinations, remember:
Hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and versatile ingredients like niacinamide generally play well with others.
The ingredients that require more thought are your stronger active ingredients—particularly exfoliating acids and retinoids.
Ingredients You Should Be More Careful About Layering
Here's where the “more is better” approach can get you into trouble.
When you combine multiple active ingredients designed to exfoliate, resurface or increase skin cell turnover, you may increase the likelihood of irritation.
That doesn't mean these ingredients are bad.
It simply means you don't need to use every active ingredient at the same time.
Think of it this way:
Your skin doesn't get extra credit for using five actives in one routine.
Sometimes, less is more.
Retinoids + Vitamin C
Vitamin C and retinoids are both popular ingredients for targeted skincare routines.
But for simplicity—and especially if you're newer to active skincare—I recommend not layering your vitamin C and retinoid products together in the same routine.
Instead, separate them.
For example:
Morning
Vitamin C
Evening
Retinoid
This gives you the opportunity to incorporate both ingredients into your overall skincare routine without stacking multiple potentially irritating actives on top of one another.
This is also a great example of why your morning and evening routines don't have to be identical.
Retinoids + AHA Products
This is another combination where I recommend caution.
AHA products, such as glycolic acid or lactic acid, are exfoliating ingredients. Retinoids are also powerful active ingredients that can cause irritation, particularly when you're first introducing them.
Using both in the same routine can be too much for some skin types.
Instead, alternate them.
For example:
Monday: Retinoid
Tuesday: Hydrating routine
Wednesday: AHA
Thursday: Hydrating routine
Friday: Retinoid
Saturday: Hydrating routine
Sunday: AHA or hydrating routine
You don't have to follow this exact schedule. The point is simply to avoid automatically stacking multiple strong actives together.
And always follow the directions provided with the specific product you're using.
What About Vitamin C + AHA?
This is another combination where you should pay attention to your skin.
Both vitamin C and AHAs can be valuable ingredients, but depending on the specific formulations and your skin's sensitivity, using them together may increase the chance of irritation.
If you're new to active skincare, separating them into different routines is the safer, simpler approach.
For example:
Morning: Vitamin C
Evening: AHA
Or use your AHA on designated nights while keeping your morning routine focused on hydration, antioxidants and sun protection.
Generally easy to combine:
Hyaluronic Acid + Niacinamide
Hyaluronic Acid + Vitamin C
Hyaluronic Acid + Retinoid
Hyaluronic Acid + AHA
Niacinamide + Vitamin C
Niacinamide + Retinoid
Niacinamide + AHA
These combinations are generally compatible, although individual products and skin sensitivity always matter.
Better to separate when you're trying to minimize irritation:
Retinoid + AHA
Retinoid + strong exfoliating products
Vitamin C + strong exfoliating products
And for a simple beginner routine, I recommend keeping retinoids and vitamin C in separate routines rather than layering them together.
The Most Important Rule: Listen to Your Skin
Ingredient compatibility charts can be helpful, but there's something even more important:
Your skin's response.
If your routine contains several active ingredients and your skin starts feeling irritated, dry, tight or uncomfortable, don't assume you need to add another product to fix it.
You may actually need to simplify your routine.
Go back to the basics:
Cleanse → Hydrate → Moisturize → Protect
Then slowly reintroduce your active products one at a time.
This is one of the reasons the Youthful Balance philosophy is centered around creating a routine that is effective without being unnecessarily complicated.
The Bottom Line:
Think THIN → THICK.
After cleansing:
1. Water-based products
↓
2. Active/treatment products
↓
3. Facial oil
↓
4. Moisturizer
↓
5. Sunscreen in the morning
There will always be exceptions depending on the specific product and its ingredients. Prescription medications, in particular, may have their own application instructions.
But for your everyday skincare routine, thinnest to thickest is a simple, practical rule of thumb.
And once you understand the why behind the order, layering your skincare becomes much less confusing.
Conclusion
Remember: Skincare Doesn't Have to Be Complicated
The best skincare routine isn't necessarily the one with the most products.
It's the one you understand, enjoy using and can consistently follow.
Start with clean skin. Work from thin to thick. Give your water-based products their place before your oils and creams. Use targeted treatments thoughtfully. And always prote
ct your skin during the day with sunscreen.
That's the philosophy behind the Youthful Balance Timeless Glow Set: a thoughtfully assembled routine that makes skincare layering simple.
Beautiful skin doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes, it just needs the right order.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I apply serum or moisturizer first?
Generally, serum comes first because it is lighter in consistency. Follow with your moisturizer.
Does facial oil go before or after moisturizer?
It can depend on the specific product and your routine, but facial oil, especially our Glow Skin Facial Oil, works well after water-based serums and before moisturizer.
Can I use two serums?
Yes. You can use multiple serums when the formulas and ingredients are appropriate for your routine. Start with the thinner, more water-based product and pay attention to how your skin responds.
Does hyaluronic acid go on dry or damp skin?
A hydrating hyaluronic acid serum should be applied to slightly damp skin. With the Youthful Balance Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum, I recommend applying it to damp skin and following relatively quickly with your facial oil.
Do I need to wait between skincare products?
You generally don't need to stand around waiting for every layer to completely dry. Give each product enough time to settle so you're not immediately rubbing the previous layer away, then continue with the next step. But get this: For our pink-labeled hydrating serums, apply to damp skin, and go immediately into your next step. For our orange-labeled active serums, allow these to dry before moving on.
What goes first: facial oil or moisturizer?
For the Youthful Balance routine, facial oil comes before moisturizer. This allows you to apply your lightweight, water-based products first, followed by your oil and then your moisturizer. This is not the case for most other facial oils, though, so be aware of that.
What is the last step in my morning skincare routine?
Sunscreen. Apply your broad-spectrum sunscreen after your other skincare products and before makeup.
